Overview

The nurse specialist is responsible for specific units assigned and performs a variety of delegated supervisory tasks that ensures the provision of safe, efficient and high quality nursing care for psychiatric and medical patients. Specifically the nurse specialist provides oversight for daily unit operations, supervises a variety of administrative functions and actively participates in strategic planning initiatives designed to enhance and continuously improve nursing care. .



Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred

Experience:

Minimum experience of five years in nursing leadership/management role, one to three years as clinical psychiatric and/or medical-surgical nurse.

Experience in a correctional setting is desired.

Licenses/Certifications:

Must have a current, unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN)in the State of South Carolina or possess a multi-state compact license recognized by the State of South Carolina to practice professional nursing and maintain a current copy of license on file at the facility at all times.

Basic life support certification required.

Responsibilities

Assists the Director of Nursing (DON) in planning, organizing, directing and evaluating processes and outcomes for nursing service.

Establishes goals and objectives for assigned nursing units.

Plans, schedules and coordinates work for licensed and unlicensed nursing personnel on assigned nursing units.

Leads assigned nursing personnel in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care.

Assess resources, patient and unit needs and assigns staff according to patient care needs and acuity.

Assists in the development of staff education and orientation, specific job related training and other approaches to provide opportunities for staff flexibility and development.

Ensures all newly hired personnel complete required orientation training prior to independent work assignment.

Implements safety and performance improvement standards and develops procedures to ensure compliance.

Participates in the recruitment, interviewing and hiring process for nursing personnel.

Participates in the development of departmental policies. Responsible for implementation and interpretation for unit staff.

Performs chart reviews to gather and analyze data pertinent to the development and evaluation of nursing outcomes.

Populates clinical and administrative dashboards to monitor nursing outcomes measures and performance indicators.

Sets up medical supply levels on each unit and develops a system for replenishing supplies.

Attends morning report/treatment team daily or sends designee.

Maintains all competencies required for currency in clinical nursing.

Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.

Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.

Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.

Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.



Management:

Coaches, counsels and evaluates assigned staff, including disciplinary actions.

Works collaboratively with scheduling staff to develop staff and assignment schedules for each unit ensuring adequate coverage of nursing personnel that includes unanticipated coverage for call outs and fluctuations in staffing needs (i.e. 1:1/close observation, admission, transfers etc).

Compiles information and prepares monthly reports, verbal and written, as assigned.

Conducts staff meetings as needed.

Serves as a clinical resource and performs direct nursing care, as needed, to ensure adequate coverage based on patient census or acuity.

Maintains all competencies required for currency in nursing management.

Maintains competency as nursing supervisor by intermittently performing nursing supervisor duties to ensure standardization and consistency in approach to problem solving and utilization of resources.

Ancillary Duties:

Leads Performance Improvement (PI) activities for assigned units. Works with the PI Manager and the Director of Nursing to identify clinical and administrative issues that may serve as barriers to the prompt and efficient delivery of safe nursing care. Mentors unit staff in the PI process.

Serves on committee and multi-disciplinary task forces, which affect the delivery of patient care within the facility.

Participates in PI initiatives efforts organizational wide.

Collects data as needed or requested.

Incorporates principles of risk management, patient safety and infection control.

Reports non-compliance with accepted standards of care to the DON with suggested corrective action.

Intervenes directly in situations, which are immediately harmful to the patient.
